[SERIES REVIEW C-DRAMA 2018] 《初遇在光年之外》Beyond Light Years

Another gaming web drama to add to the growing list, Beyond Light Years stars two more relatively new faces:

Chen Ruo Xuan as Lu Yu Chen
Xu Jiao as Xia Xiao Ci

In a school (university) youth drama that incorporates smatterings of romance and an OE (open ending) set in the universe of gaming legends.

This is one of those dramas that I’m going to be griping false advertisement about! Look at this poster:

And tell me you don’t think the two are getting together!

Li Yu Chen, a computing major also happens to be a reclusive gaming god, who happens to play computer games in his spare time when he has nothing better to do. Introverted and self-reliant, he is extremely intelligent but appears to others to be cold and indifferent. One day, he meets Xia Xiao Ci by chance, a bright a cheerful girl from an ordinary family. However, as with all stories, they start off on the wrong foot.

Xia Xiao Ci and her roommates happen to be fans of the trending video game that was developed by a university alumni with developmental participation from current computing major students. Our male lead is adept at using probability and his observational skills to defeat monsters in game thereby creating a name for himself when he defeats the No.1. boss that was said to be unbeatable.

He draws the attention of other players and the gaming company, and not all the attention is good.

In comes male lead two, who actually dates the girl – I know! Shock horror @_@ – and dates her for quite a while too.

Throughout the drama, you can tell that the relationship isn’t going to go anywhere because the main female is so taken with the main male. They just need to get over the weird dance they have going…

Even at the end of the drama, they still haven’t gotten together. The closing scene has him in his spiffing suite appearing at the family restaurant she now runs as the camera pans out.

There’s no real sense of closure to the story unless you count removing head honcho from the gaming company as one. Then again, the drama was marketed as being game heavy rather than romance heavy.

As a lower tier production, Beyond Light Years definitely shows it in the visual department. The game components look completely fake, and I mean there’s a disturbing haze around all the characters in the gaming world that you can tell is from green screen.

There isn’t much to really say about acting/character…in my opinion, it was so so. It wasn’t outstanding but nor was it horrible. The plot was predictable which made the drama pretty boring to watch. So unless you’re into gaming dramas like I am, maybe give this one a pass.

My Ratings:
Acting: ★★☆☆☆
Characters: ★★☆☆☆
Plot: ★☆☆☆☆
Production: ★★☆☆☆
Overall: ★★☆☆☆
