[K-DRAMA] Blood – 블러드 (AIRING)

The latest original vampire drama airing in Korea starring Ahn Jae Hyun, Ji Jin Hee and Goo Hye Sun. It airs in the timeslot previously held by Healer.

Starring:

Ahn Jae Hyun as Park Ji Sang

Vampire, and surgeon.

Infected with the VBT-01 virus.

There are limited disadvantages, the greatest of which is his desire for and reaction to blood.

His abilities include rapid and natural healing and great athleticism. In addition are his enhanced intelligence and abilities as a surgeon, not to mention good looks and the wealth that comes from his status as a prodigy. The perfect combination of a charismatic man.

He looks younger than his age and treats those around him in a very business-like manner. He shows neither love nor compassion, even to those closest to him.

He waits for the day where he can live with a body temperature of 36.7 degrees, just like a human and to experience day-to-day struggles in the same way.

He then meets Director Lee Jae Wook who he begins a battle with for humanity.

Gu Hye Sun as Yoo Ri Ta

Tamin Group’s, President’s niece.

She has a bright, playful and cheerful personality, yet also very stubborn.

She doesn’t hesitate to make her point and views known and will never back down from a challenge.

Once she has her mind set on something, no one will be able to change it.

Her stunning looks and luxurious atmosphere do not preclude her intelligence. She has exceptional skills as a surgeon and attended medical school at a young age.

She is known by friends to have a childhood ‘fantasy’ regarding being saved by a mysterious boy in the woods. Whose name she doesn’t remember but eventually finds is someone she meets everyday.

Ji Jin Hee as Lee Jae Wook

Behind his caring and warm smile is a heart as cold as ice. Manipulative and cunning, he uses his position as Director to advance his own research and ensure his survival. He has a long standing history with Ji Sang’s family and has established relations with Ri Ta’s uncle.

He uses his abilities to develop a reputation as a genius surgeon and his intelligence to take part in hospital politics.

In the end, who will win?

Synopsis (from Wiki):

Park Ji-sang is a doctor specializing in hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery in the best cancer research hospital in the country. He is also a vampire. Despite seeming cold and unfeeling, Ji-sang masks his soft heart and inner pain and yearns for closeness with people. He believes very strongly in the sanctity of human life, and suppresses his thirst for blood to treat terminally ill patients and save lives.

Among his colleagues is Yoo Ri-ta, a hotshot physician who entered medical school at the age of 17 and is also the niece of the chaebol group chairman who owns the hospital. Ri-ta is highly capable but snooty and prideful, yet Ji-sang finds himself falling for her. He also gets drawn into a conflict between good and evil as he encounters Lee Jae-wook, a two-faced hospital chief who gains everyone’s trust with his gentle demeanor, but inwardly harbors a dangerous ambition for power and a talent for cruelty.

I must admit that the drama could have done without the first 8 episodes, but they serve a purpose in establishing background between our characters and explain how the lives of the three intertwine. I don’t however, see why the female lead received so much hate for her acting. She’s meant to be stuck up and even the younger version of her was already pampered as is.

I do like the fact that this drama explains how vampires exist and that they use solid science rather than just leave it to the viewers. It makes it seem a little bit more authentic.

Have a try at it, you never know, you might like it.
